DADS WAR
Michael Robison (Robinson) J/PX 169189
My Dad volunteered for service in the Navy in 1939, fate deemed that he should survive the coming conflict so I got the chance to get to know him very well but it was almost impossible to get him to talk about the War. I had seen his photograph album and read his Service Record so knew a little, we even took a trip to France on the 50th anniversary of D-Day but even then he wasn’t very forthcoming. We have a short video tape of that trip which I will try to add to this site. I suppose, to be fair, and like most veterans he preferred to forget rather than remember
THE SOURCE OF MY INFORMATION
I have a Diary that he carried throughout the conflict in which he wrote lots of little notes and addresses and a notebook where he recorded his memories of some events. He also started to write the story of his life so with all this and a few other books and web sites that I have discovered I hope to be able to get a good idea of his involvement.
I will also refer to a book called “Eagle’s War - the war diary of an aircraft carrier” which will tell me its story around the time Dad served on her. He spent the latter part of the war in Combined Operations, stationed believe it or not in Scotland. They have a website www.combinedops.com/ to which I will eventually be adding Dads name in the “They also served” section and will also be referencing some of their pages and those of the Landing craft Association. www.lstlandingcraftassoc.org/
As his info is a bit sketchy here are a few Ships, Places etc that he mentioned and links to other pages I’ve found where others have recorded their memories online. These Ships - “Reina del Pacifico” - “Winchester Castle” - “Ennerdale” all mentioned here as are the Naval bases of HMS Quebec, Inverary and DunDonald. Operations Torch and Husky
